Property History

National Register of Historic Places Description and History:

“Historic Name: Selby, H.E., Rental

Description: This 1.5 story Minimal Traditional has a L-shaped plan on a concrete foundation. The intersecting gable roof is covered with composition shingles, while the house is clad in lap siding. Windows are wood 6/1 double hung, generally in pairs on continuous sills. Colonial features include the eave returns, window shutters and semi-circular gable vent. The front porch railings and the sunroom to the north, with 1/1 windows and exposed curved purlins, are additions.

Landscaping includes sweet gum trees in the landscape strip and a maple in the front yard. Two period garages, one contemporaneous with the house, the other from 1951, are attached at a right angle. They feature gable roof and lap siding, and sit to the rear of the house.

History: In 1926, H.E. Selby purchased this lot and had a residence constructed on the site. There is no evidence, however, that he ever occupied the house. In 1941, Selby sold the property to Frank W. and Margaret Parr, its rental tenants since at least 1940. Mr. Parr was a professor of secondary education at Oregon State College (OSU). After owning for just one year, the Parr's transferred title in 1942 to W.H. and Luella Dreeson, who owned and occupied 249 NW 31st. There is no evidence that the Dreesons ever lived in this house during their nine years as its owners.”
