Preservation Maryland is pleased to honor U.S. Senator Ben Cardin with our President’s Award for his commitment to preserving Maryland’s rich and diverse heritage. Senator Cardin has been a longtime, steadfast champion for preservation legislation – from the Historic Tax Credit to increasing career opportunities in historic trades.
A third-generation Marylander, Senator Ben Cardin has represented the people of Maryland in the Senate since 2006. Senator Cardin is a national leader on health care, retirement security, the environment and fiscal issues and is a leading advocate for the Chesapeake Bay, which is the economic, historical and cultural heart of Maryland.
Year after year Senator Cardin has been a fierce advocate for the Historic Tax Credit, one of our most powerful preservation tools.
Senator Cardin also worked with the Preservation Maryland team, along with Senator Van Hollen and by Congressman Trone in the House of Representatives, on the The Frederick Jobs and Historic Preservation Training Center Land Acquisition Act, legislation that gives the National Park Service congressional authority to build out a larger, fully functioning center for historic trades training. A needed expansion as the current demand for qualified individuals far outweighs those that have been trained. Preservation Maryland and NPS’ Historic Preservation Training Center, located in downtown Frederick, run the national workforce development program The Campaign for Historic Trades which works to expand and strengthen training and career opportunities in historic trades.
