As the country is facing a massive shortage in affordable housing units and lawmakers continue to explore options address the issue, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) is currently seeking comments on a draft policy statement regarding housing and historic preservation. The goal is to provide expert advice to a wide range of stakeholders on the role that historic preservation can play in alleviating the housing crisis.
As the report notes, about 40% of America's buildings are at least 50 years old. Reusing historic buildings should play an important role in addressing this critical problem. The draft report builds off the ACHP's 2007 Affordable Housing and Historic Preservation Policy Statement, which mainly focuses on review of affordable housing projects under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The ACHP is accepting comments through Nov. 11th at 5pm ET. We encourage you to review the draft policy statement and submit your comments today!
