Ryan Field, formerly known as Dyche Stadium, is a historic college football stadium, home of the Northwestern Wildcats, in Evanston, Illinois. Built in 1926, the stadium was designed by James Gamble Rogers in the Collegiate Gothic style. It has uniquely curved grandstands, which are designed to increase visibility of action on the field. The stadium has been listed by the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
The stadium is the smallest football stadium in the Big Ten Conference and the only stadium in the Football Bowl Subdivision with detachable lights. In the 1931 season, it hosted the first experimental televising of football games, using mechanical television by W9XAO. It hosted the first night football game in the Big Ten Conference in 1935 against Purdue. It was the home of the first Black head football coach in a Power 5 school, Coach Dennis Green, 1981-1985.
It hosted pre-Olympic trials in track and field in 1932 and 1948. It hosted the Chicago Charities College All-Star Games in 1943 and 1944. It hosted the Eagles versus the Bears in 1970. It was also the site of two movies, Four Friends (1981) and The Express: The Ernie Davis Story (2008). On October 3, 1931, Al Capone, Machine Gun Jack McGurn and the gang visited when the Wildcats beat Nebraska.
We certainly can’t forget the Run to the Roses in 1995 or the 1996 Cardiac Cats. Nor can we exclude the connection to Coach Randy Walker, who is memorialized in Walk With Us, before home games, when the team marches down Walker Way, to the Randy Walker Terrace, to the locker room, cheered by Willie the Wildcat, the marching band, and fans.
