Known locally as the John B. and Nancy Strain House, the stately transitional Federal-Greek Revival I-house was built circa 1835 and features both Federal proportions and Greek Revival detailing. Wide heart pine floors throughout. 5 fireplaces with restored fireboxes. Original patterned tin roof with new replacement standing seam porch roofs. Original 6/6 sash windows have all been restored to operating condition, and many feature original panes of wavy glass. Original hand-hewn beams left exposed on the second floor to display the impressive construction techniques from centuries ago. The lofty Federal-era proportions combine with Greek Revival-style architectural motifs like two-panel doors, wide corner boards, and boxed eaves. The north room on the first floor features some of the most impressive Greek Revival detailing in all of Wake County! The interior space includes a center-hall plan, a transverse back stair hall, and a substantial two-room rear ell under a hipped roof. The house was moved back on its lot in 2021 to maintain its historic relationship to the road, and a new foundation was installed.
