The Organization
Since its founding in 1961, the Historic Santa Fe Foundation (HSFF) has been an active participant in the preservation efforts in Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico and a contributor to the historic narrative told through the region’s people and architecture. Our mission is to preserve, protect, and promote the historic properties and diverse cultural heritage of the Santa Fe area, and to educate the public about Santa Fe’s history and the importance of preservation. The Foundation’s offices are located at 545 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM. A portion of the property, known as El Zaguán, also consists of artist studios and living spaces, a gallery, and a historic garden.
Summary
The Preservation Projects and Programs Manager oversees and conducts the regular maintenance, preservation, and repair of El Zaguán and other historic properties in Northern New Mexico and is responsible for the administrative aspects of HSFF’s preservation projects and programs.
Responsibilities
• Performs repairs, maintenance, and conservation of historic properties in Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico, including window repair, maintenance of mud plaster, plumbing, and electrical. Assists with tenant needs at HSFF’s El Zaguán.
• Coordinates and oversees major projects, including taking bids, hiring subcontractors, monitoring work, authorizing payment, and assuring compliance with local ordinances including permitting and inspections.
• Organizes and maintains building records. Documents the maintenance, repairs, and all contracted work conducted on El Zaguán.
• Plans and teaches preservation and adobe brickmaking workshops, manages HSFF’s preservation trades internship program, educates the public about HSFF’s Register of Properties Worthy of Preservation, and leads private and public tours of historic buildings and neighborhoods.
• Manages HSFF’s Preservation Easement Program. Assists with the creation of new easements by educating property owners and working with the Property Committee to determine the scope of the proposed easement. Maintains documentation and records, including spreadsheets, photographs, digital files and flat files. Organizes, performs, and documents annual visits.
• Other responsibilities include assisting office and gallery staff as needed and contributing articles to HSFF’s 545 Blog.
Qualifications
• Demonstrated hands-on preservation experience in the Southwest preferred
• Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation, Architecture, or similar field preferred
• Carpentry, masonry, adobe, and skills in related trades appreciated
The Preservation Projects and Programs Manager works closely with the Property Committee, Education Committee, and staff. The position is full-time, salaried, with benefits including holiday pay, vacation, sick time, employee health reimbursement plan, and 401k plan matched by the Foundation.
