Job Description
Serve as the Archaeologist in support of Cultural Resources Management at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The onsite Archeologist will provide a broad range of cultural resources management support for the PW-ED Cultural Resources Management Program. This support will be focused on the management of archaeological sites, districts, traditional cultural properties, Indian sacred sites, cemeteries, monuments, and memorials. JBLM manages over 427 archaeological sites; five cemeteries; three downrange monuments and memorials; over 100,000 acres of land for potential survey and cultural resources management. Archaeology site monitoring, site assessments and evaluation, cultural resources survey and project reviews require personnel that meet the Secretary of the Interior Standards.
JBLM manages three (3) separate historic districts, over 3,000 historic properties, historic landscapes, and view sheds. Occasional support to the on-site Architectural Historian may be required on a limited, as needed basis.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Support Section 106 Compliance Activities.
Support actions and provide technical assistance for Section 106 Undertakings and NEPA Reviews IAW NHPA, NAGPRA, ARPA, AIRFA and other applicable laws and regulations and programmatic agreements.
Conduct, plan and document Section 106 surveys and evaluations, including archival research and site monitoring.
Support archeological Site Identification, Evaluation, and Documentation.
Conduct Section 106 Cultural Resources Archeological Site testing and evaluations and Archeological Site management and monitoring IAW Sec. of Interior Standards and Guidelines.
Support completion of timely and accurate reporting including updates to the JBLM ICRMP as it applies to archaeological sites, pioneer cemeteries, and down range monuments and memorials in accordance with the guidance published as DA PAM 200–4.
Review projects and contracts for impacts to protected resources and landscapes.
Conduct field and archival research to inventory, evaluate, and document resources. Photograph artifacts and prepare for long term curation, as required.
Developing and maintaining the appropriate administrative records and archive files to facilitate access to documentation.
Maintaining and updating the SHPO Annual Log in WISSARD and other databases, as required.
Maintaining weekly internal trackers and updating the client’s dashboard to support CRM during internal Division meetings.
Create appropriate GIS maps. Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The minimum professional SOI qualifications in archeology are a graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, or closely related field plus: (1) At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration, or management; (2) At least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology; and (3) Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
Experience with WISSARD a plus.
Experience with MS Windows OS and Office software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook and Geospatial software (e.g., ArcGIS).
Excellent time management skills, and the ability to work independently and meet strict government and regulatory reporting requirements.
Physical ability to conduct day-long inspections and sampling walking across varying terrain and under differing weather conditions.
A valid state driver’s license and the ability to pass a government background investigation.

Schedule: Monday-Friday / Day Shift
Compensation: $65,000 – $75,000 per year (based on candidate skill and experience)
