The History Nebraska State Archeology Office is seeking a motivated and quality-focused cultural resources professional to lead the Nebraska Highway Archeology Program (HAP) as the Assistant State Archeologist. Under direction of the Nebraska State Archeologist, this position is accountable for the planning, organization, implementation, and evaluation of all Program components and supervision of the HAP team. The Assistant State Archeologist also serves as the primary liaison between History Nebraska and the Nebraska Department of Transportation. This position provides a unique supervisory opportunity to manage a dynamic team dedicated to identifying and protecting Nebraska’s archeological resources and making Nebraska’s cultural history available to all.

Hiring rate: $26.169 - $39.256 hourly, commensurate with experience, within agency fiscal constraints, if approved.

Examples of Work
• Serves as the primary liaison with Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) on proposed statewide construction projects
• Hires, plans, assigns, directs, and evaluates the work of the HAP team and ensures work complies with local, state, and federal cultural resources laws and regulations
• Collaborates and engages with tribal governments
• Presents consistent, high-quality review findings to NDOT on schedule and applies archeological expertise in negotiating mitigation efforts with stakeholders
• Develops and recommends to the State Archeologist new or revised policies, procedures, strategies, and guidelines to respond to changes in program needs, objectives, and priorities, and to maintain or improve the effectiveness/consistency of the program
• Develops and presents outreach programming related to NDOT projects
• As needed, assists with development of scopes of work and budgets, and oversee fieldwork, laboratory work, and report preparation for non-NDOT projects carried out by the State Archeology Office
• Other duties may be assigned, including but not limited to: helping other departments; participating in interdepartmental committees and working groups; participating in community outreach events.

Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS:  Master’s Degree in Anthropology or Archeology with experience in both prehistoric and historic archeology and 1 year of supervisory experience; five years’ experience in cultural resource management and 3 years archaeological field experience. OR any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience that will enable an individual to possess the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

OTHER: Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to provide independent authorized transportation and drive a state vehicle as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of archeology field and laboratory best practices and techniques, diagnostic artifact identification, and site formation processes
• Understanding of and ability to interpret and apply state and federal cultural resource laws, standards, regulations
• Ability to effectively manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
• Demonstrated ability to develop, lead, and evaluate a team
• Excellent verbal, written, and customer service skills
• Experience working with spatial data and familiarity with ArcGIS software
• Competence to adapt, be decisive, and delegate tasks
• Must be committed to the organization's core values and demonstrate them regularly in their work.
