Save This 1942 Works Progress Administration Stadium/Salve Este Estadio de 1942 de la Administración del Progreso de Trabajos
Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com - McCoy Stadium, el Estadio McCoy
Contributed By: Stephanie Gayes

McCoy Stadium was built in 1942 as a Works Progress Administration project in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.  It has been home to several baseball teams, most famously the PawSox.  It hosted the longest game in professional baseball history in 1981, the PawSox and the Rochester Red Wings.  This night game lasted until the next morning, and when it was not finished, the game was suspended until Rochester’s next visit, at which point it was quickly won by the PawSox.  The game was 33 innings long and featured future Hall of Famers Wade Boggs for the PawSox and Cal Ripken, Junior for Rochester.  Indeed, many stars have played at McCoy, including Dwight Evans, Jim Rice, Roger Clemens, and David Ortíz.

Two perfect games were thrown at McCoy Stadium.  The stadium has also hosted (then) Senator Harry S. Truman in a political rally on October 30, 1944.  The stadium has a tradition of high school football games.  Bob Dylan has played there.

The stadium has a unique tradition of fishing for autographs, as the grandstand is high up from the field, so fans lower buckets and jugs with ropes to reach the players.  The stadium features murals of PawSox stars.

The city wants to tear down this beloved park but, real estate investor Stephen Soloviev has offered to buy the park and put a team there.  (The last season of the PawSox was in 2019).  Tell Mayor Don Grebien to save this irreplaceable treasure at dgrebien@pawtucketri.com and sign the three petitions at change.org!
