Dewberry Engineers Inc. (Dewberry) invites applications for a full-time, Architectural Historian position within our national cultural resources practice group. The qualified candidate must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s (SOI) standards for Architectural History. Candidates will demonstrate at least 5 years of professional experience conducting historic architectural surveys for state Department of Transportation agencies, in particular CalTrans. Familiarity and proficiency with federal, state and local regulations and review agencies is required, including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act of 1966 and the California Environmental Quality Act. Experience beyond California or west coasts states is desirable.
This is a remote position based in California. Candidates local to the Sacramento area would be offered the opportunity for a blended remote/in-office setting.

Required Skills & Required Experience
The successful candidate will:
- Possess a Master’s degree in historic preservation, architectural history, history, or closely related field, with coursework in American architectural history
- Demonstrate at least five years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching in American architectural history or at least five years of full-time professional experience on historic preservation projects
- Experience shall include detailed investigations of historic structures, completion of National Register eligibility determinations, preparation of historic structures research reports, and preparation of plans and specifications for preservation projects
Qualifications:
- Ability to identify historic preservation issues and identify Areas of Potential Effect (APE). Physical field inspections of APEs will be required.
- Ability to complete Section 106 consultation with Historic Preservation Officers while working with senior cultural resource staff
- May occasionally include the drafting Memorandums of Agreements (MOA).
- Solid knowledge base about the function and design of historic structures and a demonstrated ability to justify National Register eligibility determinations and assessments of effects in accordance with Section 106. This may include the preparation of historic structures research reports and the identification of appropriate treatment measures for affected historic structures.
- Ability to effectively coordinate with involved parties to make important decisions about project alternatives and the resolution of adverse effects to historic resources.
- Work as an integral team member.
- Demonstrate concise technical writing skills.

Salary Range
The projected range for this position is $67,000-$91,000 annually. Depending upon other factors, i.e., skills, experience, location, market conditions, the range may vary slightly.
