The City of Key West is seeking a Professional Historic Architectural Preservationist Manager. Key West has the largest historic district in Florida and its unique frame vernacular architecture makes it one of the most significant historic districts in the Nation. The City is a Certified Local Government and receives yearly approximately 1,200 Certificates of Appropriateness for review.
General Job Description:
This professional managerial position administers and supervises all Historic Architectural Review Commission (HARC) programs, as stipulated by the City Charter, including the interpretation of all regulations involving the historic zoning districts and properties. Creates and coordinates HARC agendas and assists commission members with all technical reports and support materials for upcoming meetings. The position supervises all staff assigned to the Historic Architectural Review Commission and oversees design reviews and daily contact with the public, professionals, and contractors on a full and complex range of preservation and redevelopment matters within the historic district and historic properties. Supervises staff and reviews Certificate of Appropriateness for plans submitted through the construction permitting process for consistency with HARC regulations. Administers the Certified Local Government Agreement and its requirements between the city and the Florida State Historic Preservation Office. Coordinates with National Park Services and their Surplus and Landmark programs reports and technical information as required for all historic properties listed in the programs. Responsible for local and state nominations to the National Register of Historic Places. Manages and assists in public outreach projects pertaining to Departmental and City plans to revitalize City Properties within the historic district. Performs duties related to historic preservation as assigned by the City Planner.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of the requirements for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Demonstrated ability in the preparation of such nominations. Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Design/Architecture required with at least two years of experience in the historic architectural preservation field to include architectural design and modifications, construction materials decay, and construction principles. Masters in Historic Preservation, Regional or Urban planning, with Architectural and design education preferred. Must meet professional qualification standards for U.S. National Park Service as well as State of Florida Certified Local Government Program. Must have two or more years of work-related supervisory experience. Possess and maintain a valid Florida Operator’s license.
Salary Range:
$ 80,274 - $104, 356
