Nevada SHPO Programs Supervisor, Architectural Historian (Carson City, NV)

This position is based in Carson City, Nevada which is surrounded by the beautiful Sierra Mountains.  The state capital is located twenty-five minutes from stunning Lake Tahoe which offers world class skiing as well as hiking, biking, and various other outdoor activities and cultural events.  Northern Nevada averages over 320 days of sunshine each year.

About the Position

As a Historic Preservation Specialist 3, this position’s primary responsibility will manage the following SHPO program areas on behalf of the Administrator: National Register of Historic Places, Nevada State Register of Historic Places, Certified Local Governments, Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) Subgrants, Commission for Cultural Centers and Historic Preservation (CCCHP) grant program, and the SHPO’s active covenants. The position will supervise staff and will coordinate with the public to ensure prompt and efficient review of proposed nominations, federal and state funded historic preservation grants, and covenants.

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)

Master’s degree from an accredited university in architectural history, history, historic preservation, or related field and one year of professional experience in research, writing, or teaching American architectural history, restoration architecture, history, or historic preservation with an academic institution; OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in architectural history, history, historic preservation or closely related field and two years of professional experience as described above.

Applicants’ professional qualifications must meet National Park Service standards as described in the Code of Federal Regulations for an Architectural Historian as described in 36 CFR 61, Appendix A.

Approximate Annual Salary

APPROXIMATE ANNUAL SALARY – $70,282.08 to $104,713.20  PAY GRADE: 37

Generally, salaries start at the lowest level of a step 1 and increase with each year of service to the highest level of a step 10.  Includes Retirement, Health and Insurance Benefits. About Nevada State Historic Preservation Office

The SHPO’s mission includes the encouragement of the preservation, documentation, and use of cultural resources. The SHPO educates the public about the importance of Nevada’s cultural heritage so that Nevada’s historic and archaeological properties are preserved, interpreted, and reused for their economic, education, and intrinsic values and for future generations to appreciate.

The Nevada SHPO was established in 1977 and has been housed since 2011 within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The NSHPO is affiliated with three state boards /commissions: the Board of Museums and History, the Commission for Cultural Centers and Historic Preservation (CCCHP), and the Comstock Historic District Commission (CHDC). 

The SHPO has fifteen employees in three offices around the state. With a small number of employees, staff have the opportunity to explore a variety of program areas and are encouraged to pursue additional educational opportunities or professional development when balanced with existing duties.
