From the National Trust for Historic Preservation:
Preservation Colleagues,
At the National Trust, we believe historic places are more than buildings.
They are anchors of memory, identity, and shared experience.
They connect us, enrich local economies, and provide meaning across generations.
Our mission to protect and activate these places, and the stories they hold, is more important than ever.
March was a whirlwind, with no shortage of activity in Washington.
Our team has been hard at work keeping up with everything happening on Capitol Hill, finalizing our appropriations report, meeting with dozens of congressional offices, and monitoring changes within the Administration.
It has been a busy yet critical time, as decisions made now will have a lasting impact on the future of historic preservation.
We closely track recent federal actions and proposals that could significantly affect this work, including efforts to reduce staffing at key agencies, freeze grant opportunities, and diminish programs that support historic preservation efforts nationwide. The impact of the recent blanket tariffs is yet unknown for the critical work of preservation.
These changes have the potential to impact how our shared heritage is protected, interpreted, and funded, especially for communities whose stories have too often been overlooked.
In this time of change, our commitment remains clear.
We are advocating for policies and funding that ensure preservation continues to serve the public.
We are working with partners across the field to respond strategically, raise awareness, and preserve a complete history of America through its places.
This includes supporting the Historic Preservation Fund, strengthening the Historic Tax Credit, and protecting the public lands and monuments that define our national identity.
To help us with this ongoing work, we need examples of how these actions affect people and communities. The more specific the examples, the better we can advocate for preservation.
Your insights and stories help make the case for why preservation matters not just to history but to the future we share.
