From Preservation Action:

The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) and the Department for Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced their 2022 and 2023 Secretary's Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation for the Appleton at Spring Flat in Washington, D.C. and Commodore Place Apartments in Cleveland, OH. The annual award recognizes projects that successfully advances the goals of historic preservation, while also providing affordable housing for low and moderate-income families and individuals. An award ceremony recognizing these two outstanding projects was held at HUD headquarters.

The Appleton at Spring Flats project converted the former Hebrew Home for the Aged, which was built in 1925 but left abandoned in 2009, into 88 affordable housing units for seniors. The Commodore Place Apartments project used the federal low-income housing tax credit and historic tax credits to redevelop the apartments, which were originally constructed as a hotel in 1924, while retaining nearly 200 affordable housing units.

This year's award winners demonstrate how historic preservation can play a critical role in addressing the affordable housing crisis.
