President Biden Signs Executive Order to Strengthen Women's History in National Parks

From Preservation Action:

Last month, President Biden signed an Executive Order to strengthen the recognition of women throughout National Park Service sites. The order directs the Department of Interior (DOI) to review existing historic sites and National Parks related to women's history, identify opportunities within existing sites to highlight important chapters in women's history, identify new locations that have not been designated federal historic sites, and conduct a theme study researching prominent women through key periods of U.S history. The order also instructs DOI to work with other theme studies to ensure women from different backgrounds and communities are reflected in the sites identified.

The contributions of women have too often been overlooked in how we recognize and tell America's story. Of the 429 units of the National Park Service, just an estimated 18% of those units are associated with women's history and only 4% of National Historic Landmarks are designated for women. This executive order aims to address that issue.

The DOI also identified some of the steps that have already been taken, including recent National Historic Landmark designations, $19 million in infrastructure and preservation projects across the country commemorating women, and $2.1 million in Historic Preservation Fund grants for sites that are helping to tell women's history.
