We are excited to announce that the application period for our 2024 Six to Celebrate program is now open! Now in its 13th year, this initiative stands as a testament to our collective commitment to preserving the rich and diverse history of New York City.
As a participant in this program, community organizations will gain support and resources from HDC. Each of the six chosen recipients receives specialized assistance in their preservation efforts throughout the year and beyond. This includes:
- Expert guidance on advocacy and educational campaigns.
- Assistance in effective communication of your preservation message.
- Planning and execution of walking tours and other community-promoting programs.
- A reimbursable grant of up to $1,000 to support preservation-related activities.
Since 2011, HDC's achievements and involvements include the creation of 37 New York City Individual Landmarks, and nine New York City historic districts; implementation of contextual down-zoning to maintain neighborhood scale and character; completion of 19 neighborhood surveys, documenting thousands of buildings across all five boroughs; securing over $150,000 in grants and providing professional websites, walking tours, media coverage, and new industry contacts for benefited neighborhoods.
Our involvement has led to numerous achievements, including:
- Five National Register historic districts including: Bowery in Manhattan, Far Rockaway Bungalows in Queens, and Fort Independence in The Bronx.
- Recognition of Gowanus in Brooklyn as National Register-eligible.
- Landmarking of properties like Port Morris Gantries in The Bronx, Sylvan Grove Cemetery in Staten Island, and Richmond Terrace Cemeteries in Staten Island.
- Contextual zoning in Woodlawn Heights in The Bronx.
We encourage neighborhood organizations passionate about their local history and culture to apply and be a part of this transformative journey.
This program's effectiveness hinges on the engagement level of the participating groups. While HDC contributes technical knowledge and expertise, the scope of our activities within this program is directly influenced by the degree of involvement from the selected groups.
The final date to submit applications for this program is January 2nd, 2024.
