Apply Now -- Cultural Heritage in the Forest Student Application. The application period closes February 16, 2024.

To learn more about CHIF, please attend the information session from 2 to 3 p.m. ET on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. Register here.

Do you have an interest in history, working on public lands, historic preservation, architecture, urban planning or archaeology? Do you enjoy being outside and enjoying nature? If you are an HBCU student, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) and USDA Forest Service are offering a 4-week paid internship, Cultural Heritage in the Forest (CHIF), this summer June 3 to June 27 with the goal of bringing African American young professionals into cultural resource management, historic preservation, conservation, and other related careers.

The U.S. Forest Service is looking for the next generation of professionals to join their ranks. Students will participate in a one-week virtual orientation and then spend two weeks at the Wayne National Forest in Ohio and the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. Final days will be spent in Washington, DC networking with ACHP and Forest Service staff and officials, enjoying historic sites, and taking advantage of the Nation’s Capital.

Interns will:
- Experience how a career in historic preservation, and/or conservation plays a critical role in supporting the stewardship of public lands
- Learn how the Forest Service collaborates with partners and Tribes to meet its
mission and stewardship responsibilities
- Participate in archaeological surveys and hands-on preservation projects exploring original source artifacts and sites related to African American history and the Underground Railroad
- Network with leaders in conservation and preservation, elected officials, Tribal
leaders, and federal employees
- Participate in authentic experiences at historic sites related to African American history, the Underground Railroad and Native American histories on public land

All expenses are paid and students will receive a stipend of $550/week.
