Position Description : The Department of Historic Resources (DHR) is seeking an experienced, full-time Community Outreach Coordinator (COC) to cultivate and
maintain productive, positive relationships with African American and communities of color with the goal of identifying, evaluating, and protecting historic resources associated with these constituencies. The position offers a career opportunity for a self-motivated individual to design a program to increase outreach, engagement and recordation of historic sites associated with these targeted and underserved communities.
This initiative will require the development of an internship program, a targeted survey grants program and other strategies to enhancement site information in VCRIS. Located within the Community Services Division, this position will work under supervision of the Community Services Division Director and in collaboration with Division Directors. Duties: The COC will seek to support the preservation goals of African American and other communities of color by cultivating relationships, partnerships and educational opportunities through listening and consultation. The COC will promote the identification, evaluation and protection of the historic resources associated with these communities; guide the development of priorities and an increased understanding of preservation programs and methodology; coordinate the delivery of agency services and increase the visibility of DHR within these underserved communities.
The COC will make recommendations to the Director, Division Directors and the agency’s two boards regarding how to effectively interface with, and support, the preservation goals of these constituencies; collaborate with all agency divisions to deliver programs and services to African American and communities of color; develop and implement education and outreach programs in a variety of media to enhance the agency’s knowledge of resources associated with history of thesecommunities; increase participation of these constituencies in the preservation of historic properties; build alliances with various organizationsand groups and partner on joint initiatives and projects; make presentations and participate on committees; manage, mentor and inspire staff, interns and volunteers; and achieve the goals of the agency.
A key component of this position will be to develop and manage a preservation internship program with the goal of increasing awareness of the profession and expanding the identification and recordation of resources associated with African American and communities of color. The COC will serve as a resource regarding grant funding opportunities and manage an annual state-funded grant program focused on adding sites to VCRIS. Additional duties may be assigned.
Qualifications Guide; Applicants must meet the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in History, Architecture, Architectural History or
Archaeology through an advanced degree in archaeology, anthropology, history, architecture, architectural history or a closely- related major. Comprehensive knowledge of the history and/ or architectural history of Virginia and/or the Mid-Atlantic Region; working knowledge of state and federal preservation regulations and guidelines required. Demonstrated experience in community outreach and working with diverse audiences; firm comprehension of general historic preservation concepts and programs and the ability to relate cultural resource management to the agency’s larger historic preservation mission; ability to build and cultivate partnerships and collaborations with diverse group of stakeholders, including property owners, local governments, nonprofits, state and federal agencies. Strong organizational planning, problem-solving, and collaboration skills are a must. Excellent time management skills and proven ability to meet deadlines. Strong written and oral communication skills and experience and proficiency in creating and giving presentations. Ability to work effectively with other organizations and diverse audiences. Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office Suite and databases. Progressive professional experience managing preservation core program areas (survey, register, grants management, etc.) and supervising professional staff strongly desired. The selected candidate will be required to complete a criminal background check as a condition of employment and file a State and Local Statement of Economic Interests as a condition of employment. A valid driver license is required.
