This is increasingly responsible professional and technical work involving moderately difficult duties in historic preservation.
Employees in this class will apply professional historic preservation principles, practices, and techniques to a wide variety of routine and moderately advance historic preservation projects. Also, employees will exercise considerable independent judgment and discretion and will perform duties under general supervision and direction. Work is predominantly intellectual and varied in character as opposed to routine mental, mechanical, manual, or physical work. An employee in this capacity reports to the Preservation Officer or designee.
Essential Functions
Assists in reviewing, analyzing, conducting site visits, reporting findings, and making recommendations on applications proposed work affecting historic properties and properties in Environmental Preservation Districts and Scenic Transportation Corridors.
May approve building permits and issues Certificates of Appropriateness, Certificates of Approvals, and all other permits and/or programs administered by the Historic & Environmental Division.
Conducts historic resources surveys.
Conducts research and assists in preparing designation reports for proposed historic sites and historic districts.
Provides technical assistance to property owners and neighborhood groups.
Responds verbally and in writing to inquiries regarding historic and environmental preservation.
Assists in the overall administration and making presentations and reports to the Historic and Environmental Preservation Board.
Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree in Historic Preservation, Architecture, Architectural History, American Studies, or a closely related field and two (2) years experience working in historic preservation, design review and/or historical research. A valid State of Florida Driver’s License (Class E or higher) is required within 6 months of employment and must be maintained valid throughout employment in the classification.
OR
Equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and six (6) months of the required experience.
