Architectural Historian I

TerraXplorations, Inc. (TerraX) is a Cultural Resources Management firm specializing in public and private-sector archaeology and architectural history. Since 2012, we’ve combined the latest mapping and research tools with digging holes and knocking on doors to unearth our collective history and guide its future. Throughout the 400+ projects we annually complete, TerraX focuses on balancing development with documenting and preserving cultural resources for generations to come.

TerraX is seeking an Architectural Historian I to remotely work 40 hours per week evaluating historic resources for compliance review projects, specifically Section 106 projects. The ideal candidate will have prior experience completing compliance review projects, including initial research, fieldwork, and technical report writing for cultural resource assessment reports in the Southeast. Travel to project sites may be needed if they are within a reasonable distance from the Architectural Historian’s location and may account for up to approximately 15 percent of the workload. As this position is remote, the applicant must have the ability to be self-motivated, the ability to prioritize projects while remaining flexible with shifting deadlines, and have reliable internet access.

Job Functions

  • Perform basic fieldwork and technical report writing with limited supervision
  • Complete relevant forms and documentation per state and federal guidelines
  • Effectively and professionally communicate with remote colleagues across disciplines to ensure each step of the survey process is executed on time and within budget
  • Maintain project tracking including accurately accounting for time spent on work tasks, expenses during fieldwork, and the completion of project tasks/goals
  • Ability to travel regionally to conduct fieldwork, as needed based on project requirements and location feasibility (up to 15 percent)

Qualifications
Required

  • SOI-qualified in Architectural History or History
  • Familiarity with the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) and/or Chicago citation styles
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct historical research and write technical reports
  • Education: Graduate degree in Architectural History, Art History, History, Historic Preservation, or a closely related field with coursework in American Architectural History

Preferred

  •  Up to three years of experience working in historic preservation, Cultural Resources Management, or other related fields
  • Experience reading architectural and/or engineering plans
  • Working knowledge of architectural styles and types commonly found within the Southeast
  • Familiarity with industry software including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Google Earth, and Adobe InDesign
  • Proficiency in digital photography

Following a 90-day probationary period, the Architectural Historian I full-time position provides the following benefits:

  • Paid time off
  • Paid holidays
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance packages
  • 401k plan with up to 4% employer matching

The Architectural Historian I position is full-time and paid salary. Compensation will be $38,000—$48,000, commensurate with experience. To apply, send your resume/CV, professional references, and two writing samples to our Human Resources Department at hr@terraxplorations.com with the subject line “Architectural Historian I Job Opening.” The position will be open until filled.
