Essential Functions
1. Under the general direction of the Chief Architect provides design and technical preservation services related to state and federal historic preservation programs.
- Conducts site visits to properties
- Meets with owners to discuss program, project and technical needs
2. Reviews architectural drawings, including details and explanatory notes for new and/or remodeled buildings and structures for compliance with state and federal historic preservation programs.
- Reviews pertinent specifications
- Analyzes plans and makes allowances for pertinent factors that could affect projects
- Writes technical assessments
3. Provides education and training about state and federal historical preservation programs.
- Presents SHPO design training programs on the importance of preservation design as applied to state and federal historic preservation projects
- Assists in the preparation of design materials for SHPO publications
- Travels when needed
4. Coordinates and schedules design and technical preservations services provided by SHPO to state and federal historic preservation programs
- Maintains a SHPO database of design assistance projects and follow-up on completed projects to maintain quality control
- Evaluates and makes recommendations to appropriate design services and projects
5. Assists the Chief Architect in the review of all public and private undertakings that come under the review programs of the SHPO
- Performs on-site inspections of historic properties throughout the state as related to these programs
6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires bachelor's degree in architecture or architectural studies.
Requires two years of professional experience in historic architecture or one year of professional experience in architecture and two years of advanced study in historic architecture or historic preservation
Preferred Qualifications
Two (2) years of extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of architectural design.
Two (2) years of extensive knowledge of historic building construction practices and the preservation and conservation of historic building materials used there in.
Two (2) years of working knowledge of state construction regulations and their relationship to local building regulations as applied to historic buildings.
Two (2) years of experience to independently carry out activities as a project planner, reviewer, designer and specification developer for historic properties.
Two (2) years of experience applying architectural theories, architectural history, and learned historic preservation skills to project plans, designs and standards to achieve maximum user benefits.
Two (2) years of experience in the ability to construct, analyze and project costs of projects to include analyses of construction trends as would be relevant.
Two (2) years of experience in the ability to negotiate architectural solutions with other agencies and the public with skill and professionalism.

State Historic Preservation Office
The State Historic
Preservation Office (SHPO) is charged with administering federal and state preservation
programs and laws, including: overseeing the nomination
of sites to the National Register of Historic Places; conducting surveys of historic and archaeological resources; reviewing federal and state undertakings (such as road projects) for their impact on cultural resources; working with local governments in developing local historic
preservation programs in preparation for designation as Certified Local Governments;
administering rehabilitation tax incentives for qualified historic buildings; and providing education, training, and technical assistance to the public in historic
preservation matters.
