Division Manager, Development Services (Historic Preservation)

The Historic Preservation Office (HPO) is a Division in the Planning Department.
HPO encourages the preservation of Austin’s historic buildings, structures, sites, and districts; promotes awareness of our cultural and architectural heritage; and helps shape a more sustainable, equitable, and livable city in collaboration with other City departments and community partners. This position is responsible for managing the Historic Preservation Office, which coordinates review of applications for historic zoning with the Historic Landmark Commission, and Austin City Council who makes final decisions on these designations. The office also reviews proposed work to locally designated historic properties, work within National Register historic districts, and demolition and relocation permits for historic-age properties.
The successful candidate will also be managing the staff working on the Equity-Based Preservation plan, and the staff that works on the surveys that identify historic structures and areas. This position, along with the Planner Principal, serves as the liaison for boards and commissions, and provides technical advice and assistance to citizens, boards, commissions, the City Council and other stakeholders. Additionally, the Development Services Division Manager will need to be able to work in a deadline-focused environment while balancing multiple projects, changing priorities relative to historic preservation.
Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in related field plus five (5) years of related experience, including three (3) years of experience which were in a leadership or supervisory capacity. Experience may substitute for education for up to four (4) years.
