OPEN ROLE - Senior Historic Preservation Specialist, EDR (Various Locations)

EDR has immediate openings for experienced, team-oriented Historic Preservationists to join our Cultural Resources Team. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) consultation, historic properties documentation and assessment, and cultural resources management. The Senior Historic Preservation Specialist position is a project management role focused on preservation activities related to renewable energy projects.

This Senior Historic Preservation Specialist role is a full-time position based in the Mid-Atlantic or Northeastern United States and may be either remote or report to one of EDR’s offices in New York (Syracuse, Rochester, Albany, Saratoga Springs, White Plains), Ohio (Columbus), New Hampshire (Portsmouth), or Pennsylvania (Hershey).  The ideal candidate will meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards in Architectural History and/or Historic Architecture (Appendix A, 36 CFR Part 61) and have a master’s degree in Historic Preservation or closely related field. Candidates considered for this role will have 7+ years of professional experience in a similar position.

Essential skills for this role include:

- Section 106 and NEPA consultation including the evaluation of potential effects of undertakings on aboveground historic properties and developing mitigation strategies.

- Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

- Consultation with State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs), Tribal Nations, historic preservation organizations, and state and federal agencies.

- Preparing and/or reviewing National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nominations, eligibility assessments, planning documents, and architectural surveys.

- Applying local, state, and federal historic preservation laws.

- Strong research abilities including independently coordinating and conducting targeted research at local, state, and national repositories to document the history of properties and provide information for the development of historic context statements.

- Strong writing skills and demonstrated ability to independently prepare cultural resources reports and studies.

- Ability to travel (locally and out of state when required), including the need for overnight stays based on project demands (applicants must have a valid driver’s license).

- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions at times for extended hours (over 8) and multiple days as needed.

- Strong communication abilities.

- Strong organizational and project management skills, with preference to grant management or other closely related experience.

- Ability to work independently while effectively delegating tasks to others.

Additional preferred skills include:

- Experience working in the Northeast and/or the Mid-Atlantic regions.

- Experience reviewing construction-level architectural plans and specifications.

- Experience drafting scopes of work and cost proposals.

- Working knowledge of GIS.

The anticipated base pay range of $70,000-$90,000 per year is commensurate with experience. EDR reserves the right to pay outside of the target range based on an individual’s education, credentials, skill level and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity, geographic location, and business needs. EDR also offers a comprehensive benefits package (health insurance, 401[k], paid time off) as part of overall employee compensation.

EDR is a multi-disciplinary environmental consulting and design firm that has been in business for over 45 years. Our staff includes a diverse group of environmental professionals that includes ecologists, botanists, wetland specialists, wildlife biologists, GIS specialists, archaeologists, historians, visualization specialists, planners, landscape architects, and engineers.  EDR began providing cultural resources services in 2010, and since that time has conducted dozens of cultural resources investigations and historic preservation projects in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Our senior cultural resources staff exceed the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in their respective fields.

EDR is dedicated to creating and sustaining a better environment – for our employees, clients, and communities. We are committed to providing a workplace, culture, and benefit/compensation set that truly values our team members, regardless of seniority, job title, location, or discipline. At EDR, collaboration is encouraged, new ideas and opinions are sought, and every employee’s happiness, growth, satisfaction, and contribution matter. Come join our team, work on interesting and challenging projects, and collaborate with our talented group of professionals!
