Ring in the Christmas Season with Jeffersonian-style

December 5-21, 2019

FOREST, VA: Join Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest to ring in the 2019 holiday season with an entrancing look at Christmas past and enjoy a Jeffersonian-inspired evening. Tour the octagonal villa by candlelight, then retire to Mr. Jefferson’s dining room for a wine reception on Saturday, December 7; or opt to top off your tour with a candlelit wine dinner hosted by Mr. Jefferson himself, on Saturday, December 14. Candlelight Tours of the villa, a perennial Christmas season favorite, begin on Thursday, December 5. Proceeds from the Candlelight Tours, the Holiday Candlelight Wine Reception and the Holiday Candlelight Wine Dinner support the ongoing restoration, preservation and interpretation of the historic home.

In the early 1800s, Christmas was a season—with most celebrations between Christmas Day and Twelfth Night on January 6—for making merry with family, friends and neighbors; feasting, hunting, dancing and gaming. It was also the season for weddings, as it was the one time of year that large portions of families were together. (Fun facts: Thomas Jefferson married Martha Wayles on New Year’s Day, and George and Martha Washington were married on Twelfth Night.) “We know that Thomas Jefferson considered Christmas a season of great joy,” says Alyson Ramsey, interim president and CEO of Poplar Forest. “He was also a connoisseur of good food and wine, who spent the season in the company of his family, friends and neighbors. This Christmas we’re offering two rare experiences that Jefferson would endorse: an invitation to savor a festive holiday meal hosted by Mr. Jefferson, and, new for this year, a chance to enjoy a wine tasting in the president’s dining room.”

New! Holiday Candlelight Wine Reception
Saturday, December 7 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Visit Thomas Jefferson’s retreat for an enchanting candlelit tour of the octagonal villa dressed for the holidays. Then retire to Mr. Jefferson’s candlelit parlor and dining rooms for a festive holiday wine reception catered by Hannah Predmore, and a performance by the Sons of Liberty. Must be 21 and over. Reservations are required. Tickets for the Holiday Candlelight Wine Reception are $75 per person; reservations are required. Sponsored by the News & Advance and Progress Printing Plus.

Holiday Candlelight Wine Dinner
Saturday, December 14 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Enjoy a fascinating glimpse of Christmas past at a seated dinner in the octagonal villa decorated for the holidays. Join Mr. Jefferson, as portrayed by actor Bill Barker, in his candlelit dining room and parlor to celebrate the season with a multicourse dinner with wine pairings by Avenue Foods, and a performance by the Sons of Liberty. Following dinner, hear a talk about holiday traditions of the time and a presentation by Mr. Jefferson himself. Must be 21 and over. Tickets for the Holiday Candlelight Wine Dinner are $125 per person or $225 per couple. Seating inside the house is limited to 45; reservations are required. Sponsored by the News & Advance and Progress Printing Plus.

Candlelight Tours of the Octagonal Villa
Thursdays, December 5, 12, 19 at 5:30 p.m. each evening
Fridays, December 6, 13, 20 and Saturday, December 21 at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. each evening

Tour the president’s cherished hideaway decorated for the holidays on these hour-long tours. Step into Christmas past and experience the villa by candlelight while your guide paints a portrait of the ways the Jefferson family and their enslaved workers spent the holidays, by sharing true stories and anecdotes gathered from Jefferson’s letters and diaries. Tours will be accompanied by holiday music performed by local musicians. Admission is $20 per person; reservations are required. Sponsored by the News & Advance and Progress Printing Plus.
