Worshipping Deco: An Inside Look at Churches and Synagogues
February 10, 2025 |
The setting for this live, richly illustrated talk is the beautiful chapel in Temple-Emanu-el, a New York Art Deco landmark. Architectural historian Matt Postal will feature numerous resplendent New York City houses of worship constructed in the Art Deco style during the late 1920s and 1930s. Postal will examine the impact that machine-age aesthetics had on these new houses of worship and their richly-decorated interiors, commissioned for both established congregations and nascent parishes. He will also highlight the prolific career of architect Henry V. Murphy, who designed more than fifty religious buildings for the Brooklyn Diocese.
A Champagne reception will follow the talk. We are grateful to Champagne Collet for their generosity in providing Champagne for our in-person events throughout the Art Deco Centennial.
