Job Market Workshop for Emerging Architectural Historians

June 13 - July 25, 2025 |
Emerging Architectural Historians: Job Market Workshop
Call for Applications
Application Due Date: March 6, 11:59pm CST
The Emerging Architectural Historians: Job Market Workshop is an opportunity for advanced PhD candidates in architecture, art and architectural history, or related fields to participate in a virtually hosted workshop that guides participants through the fundamentals of marketing oneself as a competitive candidate on the academic job market. The workshop is led by the SAH Graduate Student Advisory Committee (GSAC) and is geared toward students seeking academic faculty positions. The ultimate objective of the workshop is to support graduate students in their transition from graduate studies to academic careers, refine materials suitable for job applications, and expand professional networks.
The workshop will take place from June 13 to July 25, 2025. It consists of six two-hour online meetings held once a week. We will meet every Friday other than Friday, July 4. During the workshop, we will be joined by guest speakers who will provide insights into what makes a strong applicant stand out. Structured similarly to a seminar course, the workshop aims to demystify the academic job market process by covering strategies for building a successful application as well as discussing stages in a traditional academic job market search, such as:
- looking for faculty positions in job postings
- building a strong application
- preparing for the preliminary interview
- preparing for the campus visit
- negotiating and accepting an offer
Designed to be adaptive to participants’ needs, the workshop will provide opportunities for application materials to be reviewed by peers and established scholars and will address salient topics and concerns. SAH members at various career stages will join the workshop to review materials and share their experiences, offering their perspectives and feedback on the overall process. Outside workshop meetings, participants must read the resources provided, have draft materials for review for their peers at each meeting, and offer feedback on application material. Much like academia, these workgroups are structured to prioritize preparing for the academic job market materials in a supportive and collaborative setting.
