NYC
Parks’ Citywide Monuments Conservation Program (CMCP) seeks qualified
candidates for the 2025 summer season. This is an excellent opportunity to
learn outdoor monument conservation with an experienced conservator in an
award-winning program. CMCP conserves and maintains public artworks and
historic objects throughout New York City’s five boroughs. Program participants
will learn about the public sculpture collection's breadth, history, and
conservation needs.
Since
1997 CMCP has offered intensive hands-on experience working with a
large, widely varied public art collection in a dense urban environment.
Past participants have obtained positions with the Metropolitan Museum,
National Park Service, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Brooklyn
Museum, and National Gallery, as well as many other institutional and private
practice settings.
Pay = $22/hour
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with conservation and maintenance treatments on prominent public sculptures and monuments with the Senior Monuments Conservator.
- Learn and perform conservation treatments including repairing, cleaning, and coating metals; bronze patination; masonry repair; mortar analysis, replication, and repointing.
- Receive training in photo-documentation, condition assessments, material analysis, and report preparation.
- Receive tool, equipment, and materials training.
- Attend field trips to related institutions and businesses such as a bronze foundry, stone quarry, museum conservation lab, and artists’ studios.
QUALIFICATION
REQUIREMENTS
A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the
State of New York is required. There
are certain medical and physical requirements.
PREFERRED
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
- General knowledge of sculpture and conservation methods.
- Study in objects conservation, historic preservation, or fine arts.
- Able to work outdoors and in all weather.
- Comfortable handling power tools and equipment.
- Comfortable with heights, as projects often require work in a lift or on scaffolding.
- Able to work Monday – Friday, from around 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. from approximately June 2 – August 15, 2025
