The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is now recruiting for the position of Director, Office of Federal Agency Programs (OFAP) in Washington, DC. The ACHP is an independent federal agency that promotes the preservation, enhancement, and sustainable use of our nation’s diverse historic resources, and advises the President and the Congress on national historic preservation policy.

The Director, OFAP, is a critical senior management position within the ACHP that reports to the executive director and operates under his general supervision. The Director, OFAP also provides direct support to the ACHP’s Federal Agency Programs Committee chairman and other members when requested. The Director, OFAP assists in the development of policy and provides direction to a major staff unit to enable the ACHP to meet the broad goals established for it under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The incumbent manages all activities of the ACHP staff under Section 106 of the NHPA, works with agencies throughout the federal government to improve how they consider historic properties in their planning and program activities, oversees the ACHP’s training activities, and represents the agency in working with tribal, state, and local governments; professional organizations; industry representatives; and the public.

The Director, OFAP provides general management oversight for 22-24 program and administrative staff who possess significant training, education, and experience in the core disciplines in the field of historic preservation, including architectural history, landscape architecture, history, urban planning, and archaeology. The incumbent also provides direct oversight for three assistant directors who in turn oversee the Federal Property Management Section; Federal Permitting, Licensing, and Assistance Section; and Special Initiatives Section. These program and administrative staff handle all of the ACHP’s work under Section 106 of the NHPA and related services to all of the key stakeholders involved in the Section 106 review process.

Apply for this position on USAJobs.

Please note the application period closes on April 18, 2023.
