African American Heritage Preservation Program (AAHPP) Research & Preservation Specialist Lead (Annapolis, MD)

The Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture (MCAAHC), is seeking an experienced and energetic individual to fill the position of Research and Preservation Specialist Lead. 

The Research & Preservation Specialist Lead reports to the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture, Executive Director, and is led by the Capital Programs Administrator at the Maryland Historical Trust.  The main purpose of the position is to provide grant oversight and technical preservation assistance for grantees receiving funding through the African American Heritage Preservation Program (AAHPP).  This position directly supports the missions of MCAAHC and MHT mission by managing grants that support the preservation of Maryland’s African American heritage.

SALARY $24.31 - 35.26/hour progressing to $38.83 hourly

This is a contractual position and serves at the pleasure of the appointing authority of the agency.

Job Duties:
 1. Administers bricks-and-mortar rehabilitation projects assisted with African American Heritage Preservation Program (AAHPP) grant funding. Reviews plans and specifications in coordination with MHT Easement Program and MHT Review & Compliance. Assists grantees with RFP / competitive procurement process. Reviews and authorizes requests for payment. Ensures project compliance with program statute, regulations, and policies.
 2. Conducts on-site meetings prior to, during, and upon the completion of all grant assisted rehabilitation projects to provide administrative and technical assistance and to verify compliance of projects in advance of grant payments.  
3. Promotes the AAHPP to the public and responding to general inquiries about the program. Assists in developing and maintaining application and guidelines.  Leads and organizes workshops for potential applicants. Provides technical assistance, including site visits, for potential applicants regarding preservation best practice, organizational requirements, and site control issues. Evaluates applications and assists in coordinating review and ranking process. Assists in preparation of annual reports.
4. Provides the general public with technical assistance and program assistance related to historic preservation and African American heritage. Participates in outreach activities through MHT, MDP, MCAAHC, and related organizations. Makes presentations to professional organizations or conferences as requested.    

Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in historic preservation, architectural history, architecture, historic architecture, urban planning, American studies, museum studies, archaeology, anthropology, public history, public administration or other related field

Experience: Two years of work experience, internships, or volunteer work.

Note:  Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in any major, along with a certificate in historic preservation or closely related field for the required education.
