Metric Environmental is a minority-owned consulting firm established in 2016 and headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our firm offers clients technical expertise in multidisciplinary environmental services throughout Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio, and Metric’s Cultural Resources Division is one of our fastest-growing departments. The Cultural Resources team works with private and public agencies to accomplish a variety of cultural resource management projects.
Metric is currently seeking a full-time Lead Architectural Historian/Principal Investigator to join our fast-paced team. In this role, you would be responsible for independently managing architectural history projects, as well as assisting team members on other projects.
The primary responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:
- Gathering and synthesizing archival research to write historic narratives and context statements
- Conducting architectural field surveys of all types of above-ground resources, including residential, commercial, agricultural, bridges, etc.
- Analyzing and evaluating historic buildings and structures using National Register of Historic Places criteria.
- Preparing technical reports with appropriately documented and defensible conclusions and recommendations.
- Assisting clients to identify project needs and coordinating with governmental agencies.
- Travel may be required up to 15% of the time (including some overnight travel). Travel will be coordinated in advance.
At a minimum, the candidate must meet these qualifications:
- A Master’s degree in Historic Preservation, History, or a closely related field.
- A minimum of two years of relevant full-time professional work experience.
- Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Familiarity with the Section 106 process of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
- Fieldwork experience including photography and resource documentation.
- Demonstrated strong research and writing skills.
- The ideal candidate will have 5 to 7 years of experience in Cultural Resources Management, with the ability to conduct fieldwork independently.
- Understanding the proper methods of evaluating a property’s historical and architectural significance as per the National Register of Historic Places is a must.
