Roots and Reconnection Festival
September 14, 2024 |
Join the Poplar Forest African American Advisory Group, interpretation and archaeology staff, and the Board of Directors at a special event to honor, celebrate, recognize and remember the history of the enslaved African Americans who lived and worked on the plantation. Learn about their talents, contributions and life at Poplar Forest, while also learning more about modern African American culture. The free, family-oriented event features an opportunity to interact with local community organizations, experience performances by Kuumba Dance Ensemble and local African American actors, and listen to talks and presentations throughout the day; as well as have the rare chance to observe or join an ongoing archaeological dig at the 1857 Slave Dwelling site. At 12:30 p.m., members of the African American Advisory Group will welcome guests and lead a special remembrance ceremony and reading of the names of the individuals enslaved at Poplar Forest. Admission is free. Local food trucks will be on-site throughout the festival.
Saturday, September 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
